A good date night restaurant has to do three things. It has to be quiet enough to actually talk. It has to be good enough to give you something to talk about. And it has to feel like an occasion without trying too hard. Koyal's Surbiton dining room has become a regular date-night choice in the area because it does all three.
The room itself
Koyal is candlelit and warm. The tables are spaced for privacy rather than packed in, and the booth seating along the window is the most-requested spot for couples. There is no loud music - the ambient sound is conversation, glassware, and the gentle clatter from the open kitchen. The lighting is forgiving without being so dim you cannot see your food.
What to order
For first dates, the a la carte works well - it gives you flexibility, and the dishes are designed to share. Start with the Quail and Duck Seekh Kebab and a Wild Tiger Prawn between you, then move to a main each.
For anniversaries or a more deliberate night out, the tasting menu with wine pairings is the move. Seven courses paced over two hours, with the sommelier guiding you through the wines - it takes the menu decisions out of your hands and lets you focus on the conversation.
The drinks side
The cocktail list leans Indian - turmeric old-fashioneds, cardamom martinis, a tamarind margarita. The wine list was built specifically around Indian flavours, with high-acidity whites and elegant reds that work with spice. Either way, leave room for one drink at the bar before dinner.
Booking tips
For weekend evenings, book at least a week ahead - longer if you want the booth. Mention if it is a birthday or anniversary at the booking stage and the team will quietly add a small touch (candle, written menu, sometimes a dessert plate). Book a date night at Koyal Surbiton.
